Dr. Hamzah Khalaf is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained retinal surgeon with expertise in medical and surgical diseases of the retina. He moved to Texas in 2016 to further his advanced training—and to escape the long winters of his home state of Ohio. Dr. Khalaf is committed to delivering compassionate, cutting-edge care while building lasting connections with his patients.
He is fluent in English, Arabic, Spanish, and learning German.
He is a proud father of two sons and a daughter, and enjoys teaching them Soccer, Tennis, Music, and Arabic Calligraphy.
Dr. Khalaf earned his undergraduate degree in just two years through an accelerated program at Kent State University, graduating with Magna Cum Laude honors. He earned his medical degree from Northeast Ohio Medical University and went on to complete his ophthalmology residency at SUMMA Health System, where he served as Chief Resident. His dedication to research was recognized with the James S. Tan, MD Award for Basic Science Research in both 2014 and 2016, based on his work involving a mouse model of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Dr. Khalaf further advanced his expertise with a fellowship in medical and surgical retina at the Valley Retina Institute in McAllen, Texas.
After completing his fellowship, Dr. Khalaf served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. In this role, he was actively involved in teaching and training ophthalmology residents and retina fellows.
Dr. Khalaf has presented posters at several esteemed national and international conferences, including the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, the American Society of Retina Specialists, and Aegean Retina. He also served as a Sponsored Ambassador at Congressional Advocacy Day in Washington, D.C. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Khalaf is committed to community service, volunteering both locally in San Antonio and internationally.
